The Otsuka Lotec No.5 is one of the most distinctive watches to come out of the modern independent watchmaking scene. Designed by Japanese watchmaker Jiro Katayama, the No.5 perfectly embodies the industrial, mechanical aesthetic that has made Otsuka Lotec a cult favorite among collectors.

Housed in a compact stainless steel case, the watch features the brand’s signature instrument-panel display. Hours are shown via a rotating disc in the upper aperture, while the minutes are indicated through a retrograde display across the bottom, giving the watch a striking gauge-like appearance reminiscent of vintage machinery or laboratory equipment. The result is a watch that feels more like a precision instrument than a traditional wristwatch.

Inside, the watch is powered by a reliable Japanese automatic movement that has been extensively modified to drive the unique display. As with all Otsuka Lotec pieces, the focus is on clever mechanical engineering and thoughtful design rather than decoration, reinforcing the brand’s utilitarian philosophy.

Produced in very small numbers and rarely seen on the secondary market, the Otsuka Lotec No.5 offers collectors a chance to own a piece from one of Japan’s most interesting independent makers—an unconventional, highly wearable watch that stands out in any collection.
